NextGen Trades Academy

The NextGen Trades Academy is a nonprofit workforce development initiative that integrates STEM education with hands-on skilled trades training.  Through a modular home construction facility that doubles as a training academy, the program equips high school students, veterans, and justice-involved individuals with in-demand technical skills while directly addressing the housing affordability crisis.

About our founder

Brian Waskiewicz is a lifelong entrepreneur, Air Force veteran, and community leader with more than 36 years of experience in real estate, construction, and development. Over the course of his career, he has built, remodeled, and sold countless homes while also innovating in technology, education, and product design.

As the Founder of NextGen Trades Academy, Brian combines his deep industry expertise with a passion for service. His vision is to create a hands-on learning environment where students gain real skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and construction—while also building affordable homes that strengthen communities.

Brian’s life reflects a profound commitment to giving back. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, and in 2019 became a living kidney donor, giving one of his kidneys to a complete stranger in need. His story of selfless service has inspired many and mirrors the values he brings to his work. He has also dedicated decades to community service through Kiwanis International, Relay for Life, and local nonprofit initiatives.

His journey—from launching real estate office and technology platforms to spearheading large-scale developments—has given him the expertise to guide students, educators, and partners toward lasting impact.

At the heart of his work is a simple belief: when you invest in people, you build stronger communities. Through NextGen Trades Academy, Brian is laying the foundation for affordable housing, skilled trades education, and brighter futures—for Detroit, for Michigan, and for communities everywhere.
